Jonathan Kennard has cemented his position as a serious 2007 title contender in the British Formula 3 Series by inking a deal to race for Double R Racing, the 2006 Champions.
The crack squad, owned by new Ferrari F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen and his manager Steve Robertson, sealed the British F3 title last year in only its second season.
Kennard, 21, raced to 12th in the series in 2006, his first year competing in the premier Championship class, with Alan Docking Racing. Now he is aiming to use the expertise of the Double R squad as well as his proven racecraft in a Formula 3 car to target the top of the podium. 'I enjoyed a very successful test prior to Macau with Double R, proving that I have the outright speed to challenge for the title,' explained Kennard. 'My 2006 season with ADR taught me a huge amount and I am thankful to Alan and his team for all they have done for me.'
'I am totally committed to my assault on the British F3 title, and I know that with the quality of staff and immense competence displayed by the Double R team, I can mount a genuine attack on the crown, not withstanding the fact that there will be a very competitive Championship in 2007.'
Double R team boss Anthony 'Boyo' Hieatt said: "When we tested Jonathan back in October last year, we were immediately impressed with his approach and outright speed. By mid morning, he'd set the fastest F3 time ever around Pembrey so we are in no doubt that he will do extremely well this season. We are expecting big things from him."
Kennard has excelled in every racing category in which he has competed, from the junior T Cars through the Formula Palmer Audi Championship, where he was first Autumn Trophy champion and then overall champion in 2004.
Now he hopes to follow in the footsteps of countless motor racing stars by winning the highly-prestigious British F3 title, which is acknowledged as the toughest and most important domestic F3 series in the world, and can act as a springboard into the global motorsport arena.
The 2007 series kicks off at Oulton Park in Cheshire on April 9 and, as well as visiting the cream of UK circuits, will travel to the demanding Bucharest street circuit in Romania and the historic Grand Prix tracks at Monza, Italy and Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
