Bird enjoys double podium

On his first ever trip to the legendary Italian circuit, BP Ultimate driver Sam Bird came 2nd and 3rd in today's two races in the British Formula 3 International Series, consolidating his second position in the Championship.

Qualifying 4th and 8th for the two races on Saturday, Bird was not too pleased. "I was heading the leaderboard for much of the session" he said after Q1, "and thought I'd done enough to put it on pole. The team and I wanted to preserve my tyres so I came into the pits, but then 3 other drivers put in quick ones, demoting me to 4th. In Q2, I didn't quite have the rhythm, and ended up 8th, so I am just working on making good starts and staying out of trouble tomorrow in the races, when I hope to make up a few places."

In race 1, Sam overtook one of the frontrunners on the line, putting him into 3rd. He was then overtaken by Championship leader Marko Asmer, but battled back, overtaking Asmer and Jelley, both seasoned F3 drivers, putting rookie Bird into 2nd place which he held to the flag.

In race 2, Sam started from the fourth row of the grid and skilfully picked off the drivers ahead of him lap by lap, ending in 3rd, to take the final podium position of the weekend.

"I'm very pleased with the weekend" said Sam "Monza is an awesome circuit, and although I hadn't been there before, I got used to it very quickly. Carlin did a great job and the team had 5 out of the six available podiums of the weekend. My Italian sponsor, Free Minds (Freem) was there to watch me, and I was proud to do well here in front of them and my other supporters.
