Oliver Turvey to race for Carlin
13 November 2007Carlin Motorsport has been chosen to run one of the drivers benefiting from a new funding programme - the Racing Steps Foundation - in the British F3 championship. Established to give under-funded young British drivers the opportunity to progress, the Racing Steps Foundation (RSF) will help talented British drivers succeed in top level motorsport. 2006 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Oliver Turvey will be the first to benefit from the Foundation and will race with Carlin in the 2008 Lloyds TSB Insurance British F3 International Series.
Turvey began his racing career in Formula BMW UK in 2004, where he also raced in 2005 and 2006. Unable to find a full budget, Turvey missed a number of races every season. In 2006, the young Brit impressed the motorsport fraternity to storm to second in the championship despite missing the first six races.
Turvey's remarkable performance, including 10 podiums and 5 race wins was enough to earn him a nomination for the 2006 McLaren Autosport BRDC Award which he went on to win over five other talented hopefuls.
Prior to joining Carlin, Turvey raced in the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2007 and in a field of over 40 drivers, finished eighth in the drivers' championship. Turvey also beat many of his peers to the coveted position of rookie driver for A1 Team Great Britain in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.
Turvey, who will combine his racing commitments with an Engineering degree at Cambridge University, made his debut with Carlin last week at a test at the Snetterton circuit in Norfolk. Completing two days on track, the 20 year-old impressed the team with his maturity and mechanical understanding.
Speaking about the 2008 season, Turvey said, "It's a great feeling to have signed with Carlin Motorsport for the 2008 British F3 season. In my opinion they are the best team in the championship and based on their great history and number of race wins, I think they will give me a great opportunity to challenge for the title.
"My first two days testing with the team went well, although weather conditions weren't great. The car felt good, the amount of downforce and grip on the F3 car is amazing and took some getting used to. We made significant improvements over the test and made a few changes to the car which didn't quite come to fruition as the weather conditions deteriorated. I'm looking forward to continuing our test programme in December."
