British Formula 3 team boss Joe Tandy died in a road traffic accident on Wednesday afternoon. 26-year-old Tandy, a popular racer and once Formula Palmer Audi Champion, was killed when the accident occurred in the town of Bromham, Bedfordshire.
Joe Tandy (pictured on the left of the above photo), BF3 and Formula Ford team boss and brother of driver Nick Tandy, is believed to have been travelling in a BMW with a friend when the crash took place, involving a box van. It is unknown whether or not Tandy was driving the vehicle, although he was pronounced dead on the scene with an air ambulance being called upon to transport the second passenger to Addenbrook's Hospital in Cambridge with what have been described as 'serious injuries'.

The van driver was taken from the scene with 'minor injuries' and transported to the South Wing of Bedford hospital after the crash on the A422 near the Denham roundabout. "Two ambulances and a fast response car were dispatched from Kempston Ambulance Station to the incident," explained Gary Sanderson for East of England Ambulance Service. "The ambulance crews worked closely with the air ambulance crew to treat and stabilize the casualties. Sadly, after everyone's best efforts, a man was pronounced dead at the scene. Our thoughts are firmly with the man's family at this tragic time." A full collision investigation has since been launched.
Joe Tandy, who lived on a family farm in Pavenham, was described by Motorsport Vision's Jonathan Palmer on clinching the Palmer Audi title: "Joe Tandy demonstrated outstanding talent by entering the very competitive Formula Palmer Audi championship in 2005 with absolutely minimal experience, being instantly super-competitive and going on to take the title with six wins. I have never seem such a remarkable effort in my eight years of running FPA, made all the more impressive because of the huge difficulties Joe faced in raising the funds, often only knowing he could race days before the event, unlike other drivers, and sometimes drove different cars."
