Super Swede Marcus Ericsson, whose participation in this weekend's rounds of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series was not confirmed even yesterday morning, made a superb comeback to the championship this afternoon at Rockingham to bag pole position for tomorrow's sixth round.

Ericsson's Raikkonen Robertson Racing Dallara-Mercedes edged out closest rival Riki Christodoulou by seven-hundredths of a second in the day's second qualifying session. "It was a fantastic lap," said Marcus, who was twice on the pole in British F3 last season. "It's been so close all weekend that to be on top is fantastic. I'm really proud."

Round five-pole sitter and championship leader Daniel Ricciardo could not repeat the pace he showed earlier in the day and wound up only eighth fastest, well behind his Carlin team-mates Henry Arundel and Max Chilton. Henry's effort was an excellent one, the Earl of Arundel posting fourth-best time, just a tenth off the pole mark. Exactly half a second separated the top 15 in qualifying this afternoon.

T-Sport's Gabriel Dias was once again the quickest of the National Class runners, this time by seven-tenths.
