Championship leader Daniel Ricciardo, the victor of three races in the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series already, bagged his first pole position of the season this morning at Rockingham in the first qualifying session of the day.
The Red Bull-backed Australian lapped the Northamptonshire speedway in 1m 12.334s in his Carlin-prepared Dallara-Volkswagen, five-hundredths better than the best his closest rival, Renger van der Zande, could manage in his Hitech-prepared and Mercedes-powered car.
"It's great to get my first pole," said Ricciardo, 19. "It's a good start to the weekend for me and hopefully I can convert it into another win. Carlin have given me a superb car once again.
Friday testing pace-setter Nick Tandy was third quickest to give the JTR squad members welcome encouragement, just ahead of championship returnee Marcus Ericsson, the Swede enjoying an impressive first outing with the Raikkonen Robertson team.
Brazilian National Class runner Gabriel Dias broke into the overall top 10 for the T-Sport team and in so doing emerged well ahead of his team-mates, International Class runners Wayne Boyd and Adriano Buzaid. "The team have done a great job for me," said Gabriel. "At every new circuit we visit my car goes better. It's great to be on the class pole again."
Less than a second covered the top 16 in the session.
