Wickens joins Carlin at Hockenheim

03 June 2009

Robert Wickens will rejoin the Carlin team this weekend, at the Hockenheim round of the 2009 Cooper Tires British F3 International Series. The Canadian raced with Carlin in last year's Formula Renault 3.5 championship and will make his debut in British F3 this weekend with the multiple championship winning squad. Wickens will be racing alongside the team's regular racers of Daniel Ricciardo, Max Chilton and Henry Arundel, all of whom have finished on the podium in 2009.

Carlin's British F3 team have already taken three wins, four pole positions and six podium finishes from just six rounds. Red Bull racer Daniel Ricciardo currently leads the championship, despite a disappointing weekend last time out at Rockingham. The 19-year-old Australian racer crashed out while fighting for the lead in race one at Rockingham and finished fifth in race two.

Henry Arundel took his first podium at Rockingham with a competitive second place in race two, while Max Chilton took home two points finishes. Having started the first three races of the season from pole, Chilton will be one of the favourites as the F3 field head to the only German round of the season.

Wickens took four podiums and one race win in his time with Carlin in World Series and has since gone on to become the first winner in the revived FIA Formula 2 Championship. Wickens took both pole positions and victories in the opening round of the championship in Valencia to take an early lead in the championship standings.

Speaking about the weekend ahead, Wickens said: "I'm looking forward to racing with Carlin again as I had a good time with the team in World Series. Hopefully we can get some good results together this weekend. I've already got some experience of the Hockenheim track from having raced there in F3 Euro Series, but it will be my first time in a Carlin F3 car and on Cooper Tires, so it will be quite a steep leaning curve."

Carlin team principal Trevor Carlin said: "Robert makes a welcome return to the team this weekend having raced with us in World Series. Robert demonstrated to us last year and on his debut in Formula 2 that he is an extremely capable driver. While Formula 2 will remain Robert's focus, we're delighted to have him in a Carlin car for a one-off race in Germany. We hope his experience an F3 Euro Series around Hockenheim will help the team and push us further towards the front. In Max, Daniel and Henry we've clearly got a very strong team and I'm expecting some good results from them in Germany."
