Holland's Ranger van der Zande finished fastest of the twenty-car field in the first practice session for Hockenheim's European mainland round this weekend. The Hitech driver headed team-mate Walter Grubmüller of Austria with Max Chilton the leading British driver in sixth position.
Van der Zande led the way with a lap time of 1.33.633, nearly three tenths of a second fastest than his team-mate. Australian Daniel Ricciardo, current championship leader, was 'best of the rest' in third place for Carlin ahead of T-Sport's Adriano Buzaid and the second Carlin of Rob Wickens, who won both Formula Two races in the series' Valencia season-opener last weekend.
With team-mate Chilton completing the top six, the Carlin team are busy with work on their fourth car; Henry Arundel may have finished the day ninth fastest but also suffered an off at Turn 1 which resulted in heavy damage to the chassis.
