Proposals suggested for 30-round championship

06 July 2009

The championship is likely to see a modification from a 20 to a 30-round season ahead of 2010, aimed at providing drivers with more racing experience as well as crowds with a greater amount of on-track action over the course of weekends.

With the 50 per cent increase in round numbers resulting in a total of three races at each venue, the full-length rounds are aimed at further promoting the British Formula 3 championship as the best proving ground for up and coming talent.

"We believe that expanding the number of races in the championship to 30 is a logical extension of the policies which have helped the championship become the pre-eminent 'university of motorsport'," explained Peter Briggs, spokesman for BF3's FOTA teams organisation. "The cars are reliable and FIA safety-approved, there is a large but controlled testing mileage available and now three race starts every weekend - British F3 is, first and foremost, a drivers' series and the best training there is."

"We were very pleased to discuss FOTA's proposal for a 30-round British Formula 3 season," responded Stephane Ratel, chairman of championship organiser SRO Motorsports Group. "It will be popular with spectators, great for TV, will make for an even more exciting and worthwhile championship and we look forward to working with FOTA to make the idea come to fruition."
