Aaron Steel is the driver of a wacky and (literally) groundbreaking car at Rockingham on Thursday as the Kent-born pilot gets behind the wheel of a Formula 3 machine with a difference - constructed and powered by a combination of chocolate, seeds and vegetables…
As weird as it may sound, Steele is infact the lucky driver of the 'sustainable' F3 car which has been designed and constructed by WorldFirst Racing; developed by researches at Warwick University, the car - which complies with all 2009 regulations with the exception of its biodiesel engine - is 'powered by chocolate' and 'steered by carrots'. As well as chocolate, its fuel also contains vegetable oil.
"Motorsport will have to be sustainable in the future and what has been researched and developed at the University of Warwick could well be the racing car of tomorrow," said Litespeed's Steele, who is the first BF3 competitor to drive the car. "The team have come up with an incredible concept and it's fantastic to have an opportunity to drive something so new and exciting; this project is being led by some of the best guys in the business and I know it has the potential to be huge."
"As original equipment manufacturers focus on decreasing engine emissions to meet future CO² targets, the WorldFirst project proves that, if you are going to wholeheartedly embrace the 'green is great' ethos, you have to broaden your vision," said WorldFirst's Dr Steve Maggs of the Warwick Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (WIMRC). "You need a strategy which stretches throughout the chain, from the raw materials to the final disposal of the car. The WorldFirst project clearly demonstrates that automotive environmentalism can and should be about the whole package."
The car made its first public appearance being driven by A1 Team Ireland's Adam Carroll at the Goodwood Festival of Speed two weekends ago. What have not yet been adapted into the vehicle - but remain under development - are cashew nut brake pads - 'every little helps!'
