Championship leader Daniel Ricciardo strengthened his quest for this year's title by claiming pole position ahead of Saturday's first race of the weekend in Belgium. The Australian will line up alongside Carlin team-mate Max Chilton with Renger van der Zande rounding out the top three after setting the best practice time.
During the half hour qualifying session on the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit, Ricciardo pulled out the best time of the day on what was the driest track surface of the day with 2.14.937. Just outside the top three was another British driver as Welshman Hywel Lloyd placed strongly for C F Racing.
The ART F3 Euro Series team makes a BF3 appearance this weekend; leading driver Jules Bianchi will start 5th with team-mates Valtteri Bottas - winner of this year's Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort - and Esteban Gutierrez in 7th and 18th spots.
Donington Park race winner Wayne Boyd will start from an ironic 13th after a poor session. "I lost it at Pouhon, spun and hit the barriers," the Irishman explained afterwards. Gabriel Dias and Max Snegirev also went off in their national class T-Sport and West-Tec cars respectively, which unfortunately both picked up a rather more damage than that of Boyd. Dias was still the quickest man in class, however, starting from 14th overall ahead of Britain's Daniel McKenzie.
Round 13 of 2009 commences at 2:10pm local time in Belgium (BST +1 / GMT +2) on Friday after the second qualifying session, which will determine grid order for Saturday's second race.
